As the United States began to build its military presence in the Persian Gulf region in the fall of 1990, the Through Our Eyes students began to explore the roots of the crisis and examine the impact of increased military spending on their Bronx communities. The documentary, which features interviews with Vietnam Veterans, a Middle East scholar, anti-war protestors, and fellow students was finished on the eve of the US bombing of Iraq in January 1991.

Caught: In the Middle of the Crisis won a special commendation at the 1991 Newark Black Film Festival. One of the festival jurors wrote, “These kids are among the most promising and committed filmmakers I have ever seen.”

The students received a grant from The Peace Development Fund in Amherst, MA to write a companion Viewer’s Guide, which can be downloaded here.
